The Dowry Bride - Shobhan Bantwal Visit India in this at times horrifying and at times touching book about a new bride. When she can't find her husband, she discovers he is in the back yard plotting (with his evil mother) to burn her alive so that he can remarry someone whose father will pay the dowry that her father has not paid. This really happens in India.

The heroine escapes and the story follows her life. The reader will learn a lot about life and customs in India. The author is from India, and she uses vivid description in her writing.

I also recommend her two other books, The Sari Shop Widow and The Forbidden Daughter.
